The U16 boys put up a tremendous fight against Star in the Cup final at Lisburn Leisureplex last Sunday. Star were hot favourites to take the title and were made to battle all the way by a committed and resolute Lisburn outfit.

We quickly got into our stride playing some exciting basketball, building up an early lead. Points from D Durkan 11pts, J Lynn 2pts and D Coogan 2pts gave us a well deserved lead at the end of the quarter 15-5 sending shock waves through the Star camp.

Star made a strong fightback in the second taking it 16-7  but P Ferguson 4pts and B Mullan 3pts kept us a point ahead 22-21 at half time. Star increased the tempo in the third and despite our sternest efforts in defense, we were unable to curtail their scoring. However, we kept ourselves in the game and D Durkan and D Coogan 2pts a piece left  the score 31-26 in their favour going into the last quarter.

The last quarter was Star’s best as they powered to a quarter win 17-7. The Lisburn boys had given their all and last quarter scores from M Gorman 2pts, D Coogan 2pts and P Ferguson 3pts left Star winners 48-33.

The Lisburn boys can take great credit from this performance. This was the third time that the teams had met over the course of the season and on each occassion, although losing we have reduced Star’s winning margin.

Scorers: D Durkan 13pts, P Ferguson 7pts, D Coogan 6pts, B Mullan 3pts, J Lynn 2pts, M Gorman 2pts
